How can you determine if firms assisting you with your career move are reputable or not?
Ask the following questions, which will help you evaluate a recruiter’s ethics.
1. How long has your firm been in business? How long have you been a recruiter?
(You need to know with how much expertise your search will be handled.)
2. Who are your client companies?
With what companies do you have exclusive arrangements?
What positions have you personally filled in the last three months? What clients can I contact for references?
3. Do you check with candidates before marketing them?
(This is crucial if your search is confidential of if you are adverse to broadcast methods.)
4. After a hire, what follow up do you do with a candidate and the client company?
5. How do you ensure the confidentiality of resumes?
6. How do you recruit and built your inventory of candidates?
(It is never ethical to recruit from client companies, or to call an individual, once hired, to learn if he or she is interested in a “better” opportunity.)
7. How many individuals do you present for a position?
8. What is your guarantee to a company and what do you do when a match does not work out?
9. About a particular position ask:
a. Why is it open?
b. Why is the company looking outside to fill it?
c. What happened to the last two people in the spot?
d. Is the client looking for a team player of a self-starter?
e. What is the potential for mobility?
f. Who would report to me?
g. Who would be my colleagues and can I talk to them?
h. What type of management can I expect?
i. How do I get the job?
